SUMMARY:The Last Taboo In Safeguarding
DESCRIPTION:Lambeth Town Hall \n\n\nThis workshop is ideal for foster carers\, youth workers\, PA’s\, residential staff\, and staff from the relevant voluntary sector. The training aims to demonstrate how developing trauma-responsive systems which are culturally informed\, can help build resilience against all forms of exploitation with a focus on the radicalization of looked-after young people. \n\nVenue is Lambeth town hall\, Report to reception upon arrival.\nRefreshments will be provided.\nSpaces are limited to 20 participants per session.\nThis program is jointly funded by Lambeth and Southwark council and is open to all front-line practitioners working with young people.\n\nThe issue of looked-after children as potential recruits for extremist groups has been largely overlooked\, despite the universal acknowledgement that looked-after children represent the most vulnerable of all demographics within society. Studies established that practitioners lacked basic awareness of radicalisation and extremism\, the Prevent strategy\, and the Channel programme. It was discovered that practitioners were unsure of what constitutes the potential indicators of radicalisation\, and how and to whom such concerns should be reported. It became apparent that radicalisation as a safeguarding and child protection issue has not been afforded a level of focus adequate and proportionate to the risk posed\, and that other issues\, namely child sexual exploitation. \nTraining facilitators: \n\nHannah Turner – Has worked in education and social care services since 2011. As a qualified Art Psychotherapist with a specialism in Looked-after adopted and Unaccompanied Asylum-seeking children and young people. As a therapist the main part of her role is to work with children\, young people and their carers/ parents and families to support mental health and improve outcomes. She also does lots of consultation-based sessions with social workers\, residential staff\, and many others within the professional network. Trauma is the focus within these settings. Understanding how it impacts the children and young people we with work so closely\, and how we can recognise the emotion behind their behaviors is pivotal to successful.\n\n\nOomar Shariff – Holds a qualification in Psychology\, Counselling- PTSD\, Mental health Counselling\, Conflict Resolution and Islamic Theology which has skilled him immensely to deliver and facilitate holding difficult conversations. A Global Facilitator\, Trainer & Consultant in Prevention and Counter Violence and Extremism for over a decade. He delivers interventions on Prevent cases and Desistance & Disengagement Programme which focuses on Rehabilitating individuals who have been involved in terrorism / terrorism-related activities.\n\nKey points covered in the workshop: \n\nIf adults involved with traumatised children are unable to manage their own emotions\, this can escalate children’s distress.\nEffective help requires intervention that is congruent with neuroscience\, developmentally relevant\, and relational.\nThe key adults in helping children recover from trauma are their carers and teachers. They require relevant support and training to be most helpful to traumatised children.\nCrisis-oriented care organizations may exacerbate trauma and undermine the efforts of committed practitioners.\nPost-traumatic growth and resilience is possible. Traumatised children need hope and adults involved with them must believe in a positive future for them.\nHow trauma can lead to violent extremism\, what does radicalisation look like and feel like?\nHow to adopt and apply trauma responsive systems to build resilience against radical exploitation within care settings.
