Over the course of this immersive, unpaid program (offered for academic credit only) , interns will gain meaningful insight into the world of book publishing while contributing to real projects that drive our business forward. You’ll learn alongside experienced professionals, develop practical skills in your area of interest, and participate in opportunities designed to broaden your understanding of the publishing industry. Our goal is to help prepare the next generation of publishing talent while fostering a passion for books, art, and culture.

We are offering a credit-based internship opportunity for a Design Intern will who work with and support the Children’s Design team on design implementation and assist with tasks to ensure smooth departmental workflow across all imprints. This internship offers a creative and responsible intern the potential to work on a wide range of book formats, including board books, picture books, middle grade, non-fiction, young adult, and graphic novels.

What you’d be doing:

• Learning and networking with ABRAMS employees, publishing professionals, and fellow interns during a summer internship experience for academic credit
• Gaining hands-on exposure to the publishing industry, from concept to finished product
• Supporting research, project work, and day-to-day tasks within your assigned department
• Contributing ideas and providing creative input on department projects
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams and learning about various areas of the publishing business
• Participating in workshops and discussions designed to deepen your understanding of publishing trends and processes
• Receiving coaching, mentorship, and feedback from experienced ABRAMS professionals
• Prepare and set up design mechanicals.
• Attend and contribute to sketch dummy review meetings.
• Make text and design corrections to cover and interior passes.
• Prepare design and illustrator templates.
• Assist with shipping and scanning artwork.
• Provide design support for in-house proofer.
• Take notes at weekly Design Meeting and Cover Meeting.
• Support Design Coordinator with administrative duties.

We’re looking for someone who has:

• An undergraduate or graduate education with an anticipated graduation date in 2026 or 2027
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to multitask and hungry to learn
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to work independently and as a team member
• Currently enrolled in a college program with a focus/major in graphic design or illustration.
• Interest in Children’s Books
• Experience using the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word
• Proactive with strong communication and collaboration skills
• Motivated to learn, grow, research, solve problems, and work closely with the design staff.
• Portfolio required.

Highly preferred candidates also have:

• Prior internship experience

Internship Details:

• Duration: Sept 8th – December 19th (Fall 2025)
• 20 Hours per week
• Hybrid office hours
• Compensation: For credit only; must be enrolled in a college program offering internship credit.
